Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins discusses releasing the film in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time.

When Covid-19 hit the United States the film industry had to rethink the way it did business. For many films, it meant huge delays in productions and release dates. Many studios opted to simply move their films to a streaming service while others decided to wait it out. One film that tried something a little different was Wonder Woman 1984.

In late 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 opted to release in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time. Soon after, Warner Bros made the announcement that all of its films would be releasing in the same manner which proved very controversial among filmmakers and audiences. Looking back on it, director Patty Jenkins would rather have not done it.

During a panel at CinemaCon, Patty Jenkins discussed the simultaneous release of Wonder Woman 1984 to theaters and on HBO Max. While she felt it was detrimental to the film, she acknowledged that it was one of the few options that they had on the table:

“It was hard to determine what to do with one’s film. For me, I was looking at what turned out to be true, which is that we had no idea when this pandemic was going to get under control, and the film had been finished for a while so it was one of those overdue films. It was hugely detrimental to the movie but I was thinking, ‘What else are we going to do, wait two or three more years?’”

Here is the synopsis for Wonder Woman 1984:

Patty Jenkins returns to direct the next chapter in the story, which finds Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) living and working among mortals, remaining selfless in a vibrant era of excess and “having it all.” But her own values are challenged as she reunites with a lost love while stepping into the spotlight to help humanity escape a dangerous world of its own making. Also starring Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, the film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.
