‘Wonder Woman’ Screenwriter Hired To Write ‘Lobo’

Since 2009, one of the many DC Comics properties that Warner Bros. Pictures has tried to get going is for the beloved alien bounty hunter Lobo. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who has now been cast as the anti-hero Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam film, was at one point in talks to bring that character to life in a Lobo adaptation until he departed the project in February of 2013. However, despite the hiccups throughout the years, it seems that Lobo might be getting a new shot on the big screen after all.

Today The Wrap broke the news that Jason Fuchs has been hired by Warner Bros. to start fresh on a new treatment for a Lobo film. Fuchs is no stranger to the superhero world, especially the Warner Bros’ one as he wrote the screenplay for Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot as the legendary Amazon Princess. While Warner Bros. wouldn’t comment on the report to The Wrap, their suggestion that Warner Bros was happy with Fuchs’ work on the Wonder Woman script, could very well be the reason why they turned to Fuchs to do another DC script.

The 2009 project had Guy Ritchie attached as the film’s director with Don Payne as the screenwriter and production on the film was supposed to start in early 2010. However, Ritchie departed the project to direct Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows instead. In 2012, Brad Peyton got hired to direct the film instead and also did re-writes on Payne’s version of the script that had this following synopsis:

“Lobo is a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenage girl to stop the creatures.”

It remains to be seen where Lobo would land at within the current film schedule for the DC Extended Universe, whether it be after Green Lantern Corps comes out in 2020 or earlier. It wouldn’t be surprising if he made his debut in one of the upcoming DC Films before he went on into his solo-film. Lobo was recently mentioned in the 14th of CBS’ Supergirl titled “Truth, Justice and the American Way” where J’onn J’onnz (David Harewood) was speculating that they were perhaps dealing with a intergalactic bounty hunter. That speculation got Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) terrified and asked if it was THAT guy, to which J’onn said that if “he” were on Earth, the D.E.O. would know right away.

I’m still hoping for a mocap Danny Trejo portraying Lobo.

  • I called it!!!

When Deadpool broke wide-open that first weekend, I tweeted to Mayimbe that DC was going to greenlight an R-rated Lobo film.

And you know what? Lobo is a great place to reintroduce the Green Lantern Corps, too.

Everything’s gonna be R-rated from here on out. It’s like the 90’s era of comics all over again.

Now this…is WB going after that Deadpool money, not the BvS director cut. I’ve never thought that Lobo worked as a solo character, but the last Lobo story I really liked was in the pages of 52, when he, Animal Man, Adam Strange, and Starfire were stranded in space. That’s a good, fun mix of characters that WB likely doesn’t have other plans for (possible exception of Starfire) so it’d be fun to see a loose adaptation of that storyline. Pairing Deadpool with Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead obviously did wonders for that movie. Like Deadpool, Lobo is at his best playing off of others.

Edit: there was a pretty strong reference to Lobo in a recent Supergirl episode, if that was meant to be anything more than fan service, you can probably say adios to the Main Man meeting the Maiden of Might.

i agree completely. i think they need to plug lobo into a line up of other off the wall characters. but most likely the characters will be other Czarnians since this is most likely an origin film explaining his beginnings.

jason fuchs last few projects were very underwhelming. im hoping he has found his place with comic book movies and can deliver a good wonder woman. if not, i worry about the main man.

Lobo being followed around by a teenage human girl sounds suprisingly awesome. kind of like a buddy cop movie, except one of them can tear super powered beings in half with ease.

  • sintheticreality2

I knew it. I KNEW after Deadpool did so well that The Main Man was finally going to get his day in the sun.

This is absolutely awesome news. I still hope that he also gets a cameo in Green Lantern Corps.

I do hope they ditch the “teams with teenage girl” concept because then the movie will be compared too much to Deadpool. Have him team up with an older female character.

The Rock would have the perfect Lobo. Now we’ll f**king get Vin Diesel or something. Maybe….Dave Bautista? Could he do, contractually, Lobo and Drax?

    • worldman2090

the rock was cast as lobo in the 2012 version. bautista cant be lobo because of his marvel contract. joe manganiello is the only known actor to screen test for the lobo as of march last year.

Well here it is, the 1st movie getting made because of Deadpool’s success. Let’s hope they take the right lesson and stay faithful to the character.

Also they need to tell The Rock that the Shazam movie isn’t gonna happen and that they are casting him as Lobo instead.

  • Torhammer

I wonder if they will let Shazam go away since has not been talked about at all in the upcoming DCU and put The Rock back in this role? The Rock would absolutely own this role!
