Comic book writer Chris Claremont explained how he would X-Men Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix to tell a more adequate, streamlined story.

While the first two rebooted X-Men films First Class and Days of Future Past were received warmly, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix were met with harsh criticism for their storylines and pacing. The rights to the X-Men were reverted back to Marvel, making Dark Phoenix the final film in Fox’s superhero franchise.

At New York Comic-Con this weekend, AIPT was on hand hear to hear iconic X-Men comic book writer Chris Claremont pitch his version of how he would rewrite the final two films in the Fox franchise. Claremont began with X-Men: Days of Future Past and suggested that Sophie Turner be introduced as Rachel Summers at the end of the film.

Later, in X-Men: Apocalypse, Jean Grey would be seen having nightmares about the Phoenix after she sees a dark future via Wolverine’s mind. The Phoenix would then take ahold of Rach and in the present day, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X would use James McAvoy as his “mental image”.

Apocalypse would then still defeat Charles Xavier except he would be interested in taking over Jean Grey’s body instead. Rachel would then defeat Oscar Isaac’s baddie by unleashing the Phoenix within her. This would then set the stage for Shi’ar to visit Earth, setting up a grand finale for the beloved franchise.

Here is the official synopsis for Fox’s Dark Phoenix:

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

Dark Phoenix is now available on Digital HD, 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Chris Claremont and the future of the X-Men!
