A new video from the set of DC’s Blue Beetle has surfaced online, revealing a first look at star Xolo Maridueña in costume as the titular superhero.

Blue Beetle is slated for release next year and stars Xolo Maridueña Jaime Reyes, the third iteration of the Blue Beetle to appear in DC comics. In the comics, Jaime discovers that the sacred scarab that gave the original Beetle – Dan Garrett – his powers has morphed into a battle suit. Bonding with it, Jaime becomes the new Blue Beetle, with the armored suit allowing him to travel through space as well as granting him superhuman strength and a range of high-tech weapons.

It is not yet known whether the film will address the earlier iterations of the Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, or simply focus on Jaime’s transformation into the hero.

Blue Beetle Seen In Action

Following the first set photos of Xolo Maridueña in costume, the recent set video shows the actor suited up as the Blue Beetle during what looks like an action scene that has landed the hero in trouble. He is seen picking himself up from the damaged roof of a car, which he appears to have crashed into. The video, from the film’s set in Atlanta, offers a look at the hero’s armored costume, including the large armored scarab mounted on his back. Check out the footage in the tweet below:

Xolo Maridueña has previously appeared in Netflix’s Cobra Kai and NBC’s Parenthood. Blue Beetle will mark his first leading role in a major movie franchise. It also marks the entrance of one of DC’s lesser known characters to the DCEU, giving Warner Bros. a chance to test whether they can make a success of a DC character who doesn’t come with the brand recognition of Batman or Superman.

Blue Beetle is being directed by Angel Manuel Soto for an August 2023 release. Stay tuned for the latest news surrounding the film and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
