The Young Justice: Outsiders showrunners talk about having another time jump in the long-awaited third season.

After five years, Young Justice returns with its third season on DC Universe tomorrow. Season two, subtitled Invasion, takes place five years after the first season. Outsiders will also feature a time jump with new heroes and mantles, although how exactly many years has past has been kept under wraps. The time between Invasion and Outsiders is currently being told in a digital series exclusive to DC Universe. Producer Brandon Vietti talked to ComicBook.com about making sure a fan who hasn’t read the supplementary material doesn’t feel lost while watching the upcoming season:

“We do have those discussions, as we’re crafting the beats of the stories. And there are some big events that we can sort of rely on for ‘the big fans in the room’ will get, but we’re also okay if a new fan in the room doesn’t get it.”

Art director Phil Bourassa says hardcore DC fans will be rewarded for exploring the comics but reaffirms that the series is its own interpretation of the DC Universe:

“We’re also careful though that if we’re in essence, using the time skip as an ellipsis, that if we got, you know if we explain as much as we need to. So if you got a fan who wants to go and do the research, that’s great but if you got a fan who doesn’t, they’ve got all they need to know in order to precede and, the flip side of this is also that because our version of the DC Universe is slightly different in places similar in other places. You can never be a hundred percent sure that even if you’ve done the research that that’s exactly how things went down in our version of it.”
