The release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max didn’t draw as many new subscribers to the streaming service hoped for.

When it was announced that Zack Snyder’s Justice League would arrive on HBO Max, the expectation from the streaming service and its parent company AT&T was that it would help boost subscriber figures by a substantial amount. WarnerMedia had projected that HBO and HBO Max would have between 120 million and 150 million subscribers by the end of 2025. Unfortunately Zack Snyder’s Justice League hasn’t done much in adding to that estimate.

As per CNBC, HBO and HBO Max currently have 44.2 million subscribers between the two platforms, bringing in 2.7 million new subscribers in the first quarter of 2021 – which covers the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s still a good haul, but not as impressive as predicted. However, AT&T CFO John Stankey explained in an earnings call that the simultaneous theatrical/streaming release of films (like Godzilla vs. Kong) has proved successful and in total HBO and HBO Max have added 11 million subscribers in the last year.

“HBO Max continues to deliver strong subscriber gains fueled by the success of our day and date theatrical strategy. In the US, we’ve added more than 11 million domestic HBO Max and HBO subscribers in the last 12 months.”

“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”

Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons and Ciarán Hinds.
