Deadline reports Warner Bros. and DC Films is in development on a standalone feature centered on the magical superhero Zatanna.
According to the trade, there has been talk of a superhero film for Zatanna amongst other projects such as the Supergirl or Batgirl films which are currently in development.
In the comics, Zatanna is a descendant of Leonard da Vinci who works as a successful stage magician before discovering her powers while investigating the mysterious disappearance of her father, Giovanni Zatara, a member of the Homo Magi race.
Zatanna’s name has previously mentioned as one member of the lineup of the Justice League Dark film which is being produced by Scott Rudin. Zatanna is expected to be featured in the film alongside John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, and Etrigan the Demon.
As for the Supergirl and Batgirl projects, Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) is writing the script for the Supergirl film which will feature an origin story for Superman’s cousin Kara Zor El. Batgirl is being written by Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) screenwriter Christina Hodson. Avengers director Joss Whedon was previously attached to develop the project but dropped out after failing to break a story for the superhero.
Warner Bros. and DC Films has many other projects in development including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, New Gods, Nightwing, a Deathstroke film, and a Joker origin movie set outside of the DCEU.
