Disney has just unveiled new details about its upcoming comic book movie The Marvels, including the identity of Zawe Ashton’s Marvel Cinematic Universe character. The British actress, best known for her work in Velvet Buzzsaw and Nocturnal Animals, will be playing Dar-Benn, a revolutionary, according to the description of an official still from the movie.
Zawe Ashton’s The Marvels character has been the subject of much speculation among fans. Details about Dar-Benn’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut have been scarce, but the character is said to be a villain.
In addition to the news about Zawe Ashton’s The Marvels character, Disney has also revealed that Daniel Ings has officially the cast of the movie. Ings is known for his work on Instinct and I Hate Suzie, and he will be playing a Kree named Ty-Rone.
“In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. “But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”
The talent behind the Captain Marvel sequel
The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. DaCosta is the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios film, adding an extra layer of diversity and representation to the production.
In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe offering.
The Marvels features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur. The movie also features the return of Nick Fury, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising the role after his six-episode Disney Plus series Secret Invasion.
