Zazie Beetz discussed whether or not she wants to see a sequel to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

While Joker was initially intended to be a standalone project without any sequels, the financial and awards season success of the Joaquin Phoenix film has since left some fans clamoring for a follow-up feature. While Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix have expressed interest or willingness to return for a Joker sequel, nothing concrete regarding the matter has been announced as of yet.

During a red carpet interview with MTV News at the 2019 Academy Awards, Zazie Beetz was asked if she was among those who want to see a sequel to Joker. While Zazie Beetz noted that she isn’t sure if Joker needs a sequel, she added that Todd Phillips would be the director to do so “tastefully”:

“Ah, I don’t know, I don’t know if it needs one. I think there is a lot of strength in not milking something. Honestly, I feel like Todd [Phillips] would be the person to be able to do that tastefully. I think if he felt that it needed one. I really trust him. He’s really creative and smart and — so sure!”

Here is the official synopsis for Zazie Beetz and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker is now available on Digital HD, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD.
