‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Was One Of Andy Serkis’ Biggest Challenges

War for the Planet of the Apes

The first trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes aired at New York Comic Con, and it sounds as good as the other movies in the franchise.

In footage shown at the event, Andy Serkis’ Caesar encounter some humans, and it doesn’t end too well for men. Serkis’ character acts a little less thoughtfully compared to his best friend, Maurice. The best bit about this scene was seeing how these characters are brought to life: human actors wearing motion-capture suits and dots.

That’s what makes the franchise such a spectacle, it’s nearly all effects but looks stunning. The work that goes into making the movies is obviously plentiful, and it’s easily to overlook the difficulty of bringing the characters to life. Andy Serkis recently claimed that this movie was one of the most demanding and challenging shoots he’s ever been a part of.

“This was not an easy film to make. It was emotionally exhausting. The level that I had to operate on playing this character was probably the most challenging I’ve ever had to do. You’re going for the truth of the situation. You’re altering your chemistry as a human being. You’re lying to yourself, to take yourself to a place where you believe this place is true. The stakes are so high, the emotions are so raw… day in and day out it was very taxing. It was really demanding.”

Sounds like Serkis has put his all in his role! You can see him in action in War for the Planet of the Apes on July 14, 2017.
