Supergirl is not just making a big move over to The CW for its second season, but they are also adding several new characters, both from the DC Universe as well as original characters. Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin will officially be playing Clark Kent/Kal-El a.k.a. Superman (who we have some questions about) in the first two episodes and Lex Luthor’s little sister Lena Luthor will be joining as a series regular along with new recurring additions like Detective Maggie Sawyer. Season 1 did a phenomenal job introducing several terrific characters out of the DC lore like Martian Manhunter, Livewire, Reactron, Silver Banshee, Indigo and many more.
But there are still several other exciting DC characters that the series could add in Season 2, especially with its move to The CW where Supergirl will (eventually, somehow) join the same universe as The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow. As we slowly get closer to the season premiere of Season 2, today I’m going through 5 DC Comics characters that Supergirl should feature in its second year. Hit the NEXT button below and let’s go through some amazing DC Comics players that should join the Girl of Steel.
5: John Henry Irons a.k.a. Steel
By now, you have hopefully forgotten Shaquille O’Neal’s Steel film from 1997, or better yet, never even seen that disaster (sorry not sorry?). A character that I have wanted to see pop on Supergirl even as early as Season 1 is John Henry Irons a.k.a. Steel who becomes the iron hero after being inspired by the Man of Steel himself. Even before the news that Superman would be coming to Supergirl, I thought Steel would make an excellent addition on the series as it would allow the character to not only be done properly, but also let him be fleshed out through several hours of television. We have actually seen a few early nods to Steel already in the DC TV Universe as the company AmerTek Industries, which Irons work for in the comics, has showed up on both The Flash and Arrow. My dream actor for this role would be without doubt Terry Crews from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, just putting it out there.
4: Zatanna Zatara
One of my all-time favorite DC Comics characters has always been the lovely Zatanna Zatara, whether it’s in the comics, her appearances in the media like on Young Justice or on Smallville (played by Serinda Swan) and more. I’ve also always enjoyed the idea of magic in the DC Universe and Zatanna is without doubt one of those magic based characters. While there is a Justice League Dark movie that is most likely happening, where she would probably appear in too, I don’t see this hindering someone like Zatanna from popping up on television. Supergirl would be the best show for Zatanna to appear on as we haven’t seen magic yet be explored on this show and if you didn’t know, Kryptoninans can actually be affected by magic. She would be a great fellow DC heroine for Kara to have as an ally as we haven’t seen any female heroes join the show yet which I hope we do see in Season 2.
3: M’gann M’orzz a.k.a. Miss Martian
While it was taken from us way too soon (thanks for that, Cartoon Network), Young Justice will forever be one of the best DC Comics animated shows that has ever been put out there. One of the characters that got greatly explored on that show was M’gann M’orzz a.k.a. Miss Martian, a huge fan favorite amongst viewers. Supergirl is no strangers to martian, especially white martians as we saw one show up in Season 1 as we were learning more about Martain Manhunter. I think this is the best time to really introduce someone like Miss Martain in live-action as it would not only give Kara another female hero to ally with, but it would also give J’onn the closest thing to a family again as we know what sadly happened to his wife and kids. I also like the idea of Kara not having to feel so alone in being an alien on Earth even though she has J’onn and Clark.
2: Brainiac 5 (and the Legion of Super-Heroes)
I’m not going to life: one of Supergirl’s problems in Season 1 was without doubt the too many love interests that Kara had which I hope doesn’t carry on to Season 2. Whether it’s Jimmy that she is destined for or not, there is one character in particular that I hope to see get explored as a great love for Kara and that is Brainiac 5. Through the comics that I have read with Brainiac 5 in it, I have always enjoyed the concept of a friendly version of Brainiac and bringing in him from the future would be a nice element for the show to explore. What I would also want to see with a possible introduction of Brainiac 5, is also the introduction of the Legion of Super-Heroes which we have already gotten the biggest nod to as we have seen Superman own a Legion ring lying around in the Fortress of Solitude and Supergirl does have a connection with that group in the comics, so it would definitely fit in introducing onto this show and who knows, maybe even have them show up through Legends of Tomorrow one day.
1: CW DC Heroines
This one is a slight cheat, but I think some of you would want to see it happen too. We have seen several great female DC heroines on the other CW-DC shows and whenever Supergirl does merge with that universe, it will allow for some of them to show up on Kara’s show and vice versa. How great would it be to see characters like Speedy, White Canary, Hawkgirl, Vixen show up in National City for a mini-crossover with the Girl of Steel? While Black Siren isn’t a hero, there is definitely a reason why the writers of The Flash decided to keep Earth-2 Laurel Lance on Earth-1, maybe to redeem her into a hero and have her pick up Earth-1 Laurel’s mantel as the Black Canary. If I can see Katie Cassidy and Melissa Benoist share the screen together as a heroic duo, this geek will be able to die happy. The possibilities with any of these DC heroines are limitless and heck, I think it’s darn time that we get a female Justice League on screen in some shape of form.
Those are some of the characters that I hope to see featured in the second season of Supergirl. Now we want to hear from you – what DC Comics characters, heroes or villains, would you like to see show up in Season 2? Let us know in the comments below!
Supergirl, which has been renewed for Season 2, will be moving over to The CW this fall in October (premiere date to be announced later) on Monday nights at 8/7c.
