Did Deadpool and Wolverine introduce a new version of Pyro? Aaron Stanford speaks on how he approached his return to the Marvel Universe.
The last fans saw Aaron Stanford’s Pyro, the mutant had been defeated by Iceman, before being killed off-screen by Sentinels. With Fox’s Marvel properties going through multiple timeline resets following his last appearance, X-Men fans were left wondering what version of the character he played in Deadpool and Wolverine. According to Stanford, it was the same old Pyro fans grew to love.
“I just took it as a continuation but again, with an adjustment for tone. Basically what I did was reach back and think this was the Pyro from X-Men 2,” Stanford told Comicbook.com. “The idea behind that character was that he was a young, disaffected, and outcast kid who becomes radicalized. He becomes a radicalized terrorist and we see that journey. I took that interesting, complete portrait and then adjusted it for the Deadpool universe and the given circumstances of that world.”
It’s good to hear that Aaron Stanford was able to step back into the role of Pyro after nearly 20 years away from the character. Deadpool and Wolverine featured a lot of actors making their return to the world of Marvel. However, they all seemed as natural as the day that they left the world of spandex.
Aaron Stanford’s Pitch For Pyro’s Return
It seems Aaron Stanford had been considering Pyro’s return before he even got the call to reprise his role in Deadpool and Wolverine. In an exclusive talk with Heroic Hollywood, Stanford revealed his pitch for a story set in an entirely different Marvel universe, one that sent Pyro down a much darker path than the original films.
“I write, so there’s lots of stuff that I work on. Lots of stories I like to tell. I have an idea for a Pyro story that sort of takes place in an alternate universe. It’s a grown Pyro who is an X-extremist basically. He was an X-activist extremist, he’s done some horrible things, and now he’s on the run from the law with his family. So that’s sort of an idea I’ve been incubating.”
While it’s not likely that Marvel will be greenlighting a Pyro Disney Plus series anytime soon, it seems Aaron Stanford was able to see parts of his vision for his return come to light in Deadpool and Wolverine. Though given how his character ended up in the film, being on the run from the law doesn’t exactly sound too bad!
