The showrunners for Agents of SHIELD have revealed that they almost included MODOK for the show’s final season.
MODOK is a character who seems to have a history of almost making it into Marvel’s television shows but never does. The character was going to be played by Keith David for Marvel’s New Warriors series which sadly never got off the ground. Patton Oswald is still set to play MODOK for an animated series named after the character which is still happening but has yet to announce a release date. But, as it turns out, the character almost got the live-action treatment.
While speaking to the AV Club, Agents of SHIELD producer Jeffery Bell revealed that they were given the green light by Marvel to use MODOK for the show’s final season. Unfortunately, the writer’s ambition seemed to have gotten the better of them with the character and Marvel ultimate changed their mind:
“We had a lot of ideas where we were—and I’ll say this, I don’t care—we were given the green light originally to use certain characters from Marvel, and started to break story based on those characters—[Coughs.] MODOK—and then they retracted it. So there were a bunch of things that were going to get a little batsh*t crazy that were above our pay grade, in terms of the toys we were allowed to play with.”
