A new image from Andor shows Diego Luna and Stellan Skarsgård in action in the Star Wars series, which creator Tony Gilroy has revealed will cover a five-year story in its two seasons.

Andor follows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor in the years prior to his role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The series is set to explore the early years of the Rebellion, with Genevieve O’Reilly returning as Mon Mothma, founder of the Rebel Alliance.

In addition to returning cast members from Rogue One, Andor is set to introduce new faces to the Star Wars universe, including Stellan Skarsgård as Luthen and Fiona Shaw as Maarva.

The Path To ‘Rogue One’

Series creator Tony Gilroy recently spoke to Empire about how Andor leads into Rogue One in an interview that came alongside a new image from the upcoming Disney Plus Star Wars series.

The image shows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor atop a speeder bike, alongside Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen. Little is known about Skarsgård’s character, but the series’ trailer, which debuted at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, appears to set up Luthen as a rebel.

Speaking about the upcoming Star Wars series, Andor creator Tony Gilroy revealed that the first season would take place over the course of a year, with the second season covering the next four years that lead up to the events of Rogue One:

“The scale of the show is so huge. Directors work in blocks of three episodes, so we did four blocks [in Season 1] of three episodes each. We looked and said, ‘Wow, it’d be really interesting if we come back, and we use each block to represent a year. We’ll move a year closer with each block’ … From a narrative point of view, it’s really exciting to be able to work on something where you do a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and then jump a year.”

Andor arrives on Disney Plus on August 31 and its first season will consist of 12 episodes, set five years before Rogue One. Reports have suggested Forest Whitaker may also be returning as Rogue One‘s Saw Gerrera. While unconfirmed, given the series’ placement in the Star Wars timeline, it’s possible Whitaker and a range of other familiar faces could be set to cameo.

Diego Luna first appeared as Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Here is the synopsis for the film:

Former scientist Galen Erso lives on a farm with his wife and young daughter, Jyn. His peaceful existence comes crashing down when the evil Orson Krennic takes him away from his beloved family. Many years later, Galen becomes the Empire’s lead engineer for the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, the Death Star. Knowing that her father holds the key to its destruction, Jyn joins forces with a spy and other resistance fighters to steal the space station’s plans for the Rebel Alliance.

Directed by Gareth Edwards from a screenplay co-written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy based on a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is available on Digital HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD, while Andor will hit Disney Plus in 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Diego Luna’s Andor, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more great video content!
