Andor was a runaway success for Star Wars when it debuted on Disney Plus last year. Diego Luna, who plays the titular Andor, has defended the series against complaints about the show’s pacing.
Fans and casual viewers of Star Wars alike all seemed to love Andor for bringing a new spin to the galaxy far, far away. However, the show wasn’t without its critics. One of the most consistently cited issues even among fans is that the show has a slow start, taking a bit to truly get going. When asked if he was confident in the slower nature of the show, Diego Luna insisted it was necessary for the story they were trying to tell:
“I think confidence is not the word. I think just the relief, I would say, came, but way before the nominations,” Luna told The Playlist. “I remember when I got the news of the Golden Globe nomination, I was already shooting season two, so excited to be back. I think the great relief and the beautiful feeling came right after the first two or three weeks of the show being aired…It’s a show that, yes, asks for patience, but because of its complexity, there is no other way to get there. And once it delivers, once it gets to that climatic third episode, you are so invested with these characters because of what’s going on.”
As Diego Luna said, Andor season 2 is already well underway with filming. Given the first scene already introduced viewers to the world of the show, it’s likely the next season won’t be nearly as slowly paced as its prior season. Despite this, fans will still have to wait nearly a year until the season drops on Disney Plus in August 2024.
