‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ VFX Supervisor Talks Andrew Garfield Photo Leak

Andrew Garfield was the werewolf all along!

Andrew Garfield Amazing Spider-Man 3 No Way Home

A VFX supervisor on Spider-Man: No Way Home explains how a shot with Andrew Garfield could’ve gotten leaked before the release.

In the months leading up to the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, some fans were caught by surprise to see material relating to the return of previous characters from different iterations prior to Tom Holland’s take on the webhead. In particular, there was an unfinished shot from the film that leaked months in advance, in which we see Andrew Garfield unmasked as Spidey, crouching and holding onto handle bars as he speaks with an unseen figure that turned out to be none other than Tobey Maguire.

Given that this big shot featuring Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home leaked, some have wondered whether or not this was a deliberate choice by the marketing team for the film, or if it somehow slipped through the cracks. Well, Digital Domain VFX Supervisor Kelly Port had an answer, explaining to Corridor Crew the following:

“It’s just thousands of people. Like, our visual effects team was by far our biggest team there is and often the leaks don’t necessarily come from VFX. In this case, I think they did, or an out-sourced vendor is where I think [the leak] really came from,” Port explained. “I think the main thing that keeps people from doing it is just, they’re gonna lose their job, like, forever…

As a studio, when Marvel/Sony sends over a sequence to a visual effects studio to begin work, we call that a turnover. And then when they get that, it’s usually sent as a sequence, and your name is watermarked across the whole thing…that’s sort of the preventative medicine.”

The return of Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home was universally praised by critics and fans alike, many of which were critical of the Academy Award-nominated actor’s previous two standalone films, and saw the new movie as a an opportunity well spent in giving his portrayal of the webhead justice. Some fans have responded so positively, that many have expressed a desire to see him return in some capacity, whether it’d be in a third standalone film of his own, or in another sequel to No Way Home.
