It still feels weird to say and comprehend for many, myself included, that Andrew Lincoln is indeed departing from The Walking Dead during its ninth season. How Rick Grimes will ultimately exit, whether he walks way or dies, remains to be seen, but indeed, as AMC has been promoting the season, we are indeed coming upon the final episodes of Rick Grimes.
Again, I said Rick Grimes, not necessarily Andrew Lincoln. As was indicated earlier, Michael Cudlitz, who portrayed Sergeant Abraham Ford until he met his end at the hands of Lucille in the seventh season premiere, will be returning to direct an episode. The same could be the case with Andrew Lincoln, as he recently revealed his plans to Entertainment Weekly about how he will still be a part of The Walking Dead family after his departure. With the series still filming in Senoia, Georgia, Lincoln stated that he’ll be there as well:
“I’m going back. I’m going back to shadow a director, and my intention is to direct next year.”
It’s not much to go off, sure, when Andrew Lincoln says that he’ll be going back, particularly when many could see that as a sign that maybe this won’t be the last we see of either Andrew Lincoln or Rick Grimes in the world of The Walking Dead, but at least even after he’s gone, it doesn’t seem that Lincoln will be gone for good from the zombie apocalypse series.
Furthermore, as has been indicated in the past, it’s not uncommon for stars or actors of series to one day write or direct an episode of said program, as we’ve seen with Ben McKenzie writing and directing on Gotham, or Krysten Ritter getting behind the camera for the third season of Jessica Jones. Now it seems that Andrew Lincoln is throwing his hat into the ring alongside Cudlitz, as well as Colman Domingo, who directed an episode of Fear the Walking Dead.
What do you think of the possibility of Andrew Lincoln directing an episode of The Walking Dead? And even now at this point, what do you make of the news that Rick Grimes will be exiting the series? Let us know in the comments below.
