Is Alfred in big trouble?

Andy Serkis has some big ideas for Alfred! The actor reveals the storyline he wants to see pursued in the upcoming sequel to The Batman.

The Batman was absolutely chocked full of memorable performances. From Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader to Paul Dano’s Riddler, the project was simple a tour de force when it comes to acting in a superhero project. In fact, there were so many good performances in the film that many people often forget that Andy Serkis was in the film, serving as Batman’s beloved butler Alfred Pennyworth.

While Andy Serkis obviously didn’t play the biggest role in The Batman, those that remember he’s in the film can reminisce on a truly stunning performance as Alfred. Serkis himself reflected on the role during an appearance at Fan Expo Philadelphia this past weekend. While he didn’t give fans many details about the sequel, he did look back on what he felt made his performance as the butler stand out in a sea of fantastic performances.

“What I loved about what Matt [Reeves] created in the last one was this sense of a guardian who has not an iota of paternal instinct him, trying to be a father he could never be, ” Serkis remarked during the panel. “And that was really at the core of their relationship. He really felt he had failed the one person that he adores and tries to look after.”

Andy Serkis’ Hopes For Alfred In The Batman

However, Andy Serkis didn’t just look back: he looked forward. While the actor sadly didn’t have any updates on the long-awaited sequel to The Batman, he did reveal that he has some hopes about where to take Alfred’s story. Specifically, leaning even deeper into the idea that the butler is woefully unequipped to serve as a father figure to someone like Bruce.

“He knows how to help him in terms of skills and in terms of cracking bones, and how to fight, and all of those things from being a soldier, from being in the military in his past. But the one thing that he fails to do is to have a real proper paternal feeling for him. And I would like to see the exploration of that deeply and go further.”

“I mean, I don’t know anything about the story or where Matt’s taking him, but I would love to see that taken to the extreme, but in a more extreme situation.”

Of course, there’s no shortage of extreme situations Alfred could find himself in during the events of The Batman sequel. The character has had his hand chopped off, he’s seen his loved ones die, he’s even died himself! This not to mention any original ideas that Matt Reeves may be cooking up in the lab. Even though there’s no certainty that Andy Serkis’ wishes will come true, one can only hope to see more of Alfred as the story goes on.

The Batman sequel is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
