Lord of the Rings star and future Alfred Pennyworth actor Andy Serkis has hinted that Robert Pattinson’s The Batman will be darker than previous entries.

Since it was revealed that Robert Pattinson would be playing the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, details for the upcoming DC superhero began to steadily trickle out. One of the more surprising reveals was that Lord of the Rings star and Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis would be portraying Batman’s dedicated butler, friend, and surrogate father, Alfred Pennyworth. However, we really don’t know how big of a role Alfred would play in the film until now.

While speaking to LAD Bible, Andy Serkis dropped a few hints as to what we could expect from The Batman. When asked if the upcoming film would would be darker then previous entries, Serkis remained coy but seemed to indicate that this would be the case:

“I would say that’s not far from the truth.”

Later on, he talked about his role in the film and how the relationship between Alfred and Batman was at the center of the film:

“It’s very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That’s really at the centre of it. And it is a really exquisite script that Matt has written.”

What do you all make of Andy Serkis’ words? Would you like to see an even darker version of Batman? Are you looking forward to seeing Alfred at the center of it all? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Full plot details on The Batman are being kept under wraps, but we know that the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and features a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that includes Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. Following the Dark Knight during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector, The Batman will also make use of the hero’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous live-action adaptations. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new trilogy with Robert Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
