Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett won Best Suporting Actress at the 80th Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday.
Angela Bassett won her second Golden Globe award for her work as Queen Ramonda in the Marvel Studios feature Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Bassett was up against Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Dolly De Leon (Triangle of Sadness) and Carey Mulligan (She Said), with the win making her the first actor to win a Golden Globe award for a Marvel production.
“I got to find my words. I’m so nervous. My heart is just beating,” Bassett said while accepting the award. “The late Tony Morrison said that your life is already a miracle of chance just waiting for you to order its destiny. But in order for that destiny to manifest, I think that it requires courage to have faith. It requires patience, as we just heard. And it requires a true sense of yourself. It’s not easy because the past is circuitous and it has many unexpected detours, but, by the grace of God, I stand here. I stand here grateful.”
Two years after the release of Black Panther and T’Challa’s return in Avengers: Infinity War and its follow-up Endgame, Chadwick Boseman, the actor behind the fan-favorite character, passed away at the age of 43, following a four-year battle with colon cancer. Marvel made the decision not to recast T’Challa, with his sister Shuri taking on the Black Panther mantle.
The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star went on to add the following: “We embarked on this journey together with love. We mourned, we loved, we healed. We were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman. We have joy in knowing that with this historic Black Panther series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like, behind and in front of the camera. To the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love.”
Wakanda Forever was directed by Ryan Coogler from a screenplay he co-wrote alongside Joe Robert Cole. The film stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta, Martin Freeman and Angela Bassett.

In Heroic Hollywood’s review of the movie Ryden Scarnato wrote “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, with T’Challa’s death becoming permanent due to Boseman’s real-life passing and the story now following the world of Wakanda dealing with that grief. While the film is an ensemble, it ultimately rests on the shoulders of Letitia Wright’s Shuri and Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda.”
“When it comes to performances, everyone here is at the top of their game, and you can’t help but think that’s because of how intertwined the film is with real life. With Wright and Bassett serving as focal points, the two are the strongest of the bunch, with incredibly personal moments that are some of the most heartfelt we’ve ever seen in the MCU. Shuri’s larger role in the film, in particular, also works for those who might have reservations.”
