Marvel’s new Captain America Anthony Mackie has said he’s holding out hope for Chris Evans to return to the role of Steve Rogers alongside his version of Cap in the MCU.

Avengers: Endgame saw a time-travelling Steve Rogers living out a life in the past with his WW2 sweetheart Peggy Carter, reappearing the present as an old man. Steve then passed his iconic shield on to Sam Wilson, bestowing on him the mantle of Captain America.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier charted Sam’s journey towards embracing the role of Captain America and Anthony Mackie thinks Sam should now reunite with his shield’s original owner.

Speaking to Variety at D23 Expo, where much of the cast of Captain America: New World Order was announced, Anthony Mackie was asked about whether Marvel fans would get to see Chris Evans return to the role of Steve Rogers.

Mackie revealed that he hopes to see Chris Evans come back to the role of Steve. He pointed to Winter Soldier actor Sebastian Stan getting to share the screen with their Falcon and The Winter Soldier co-star Wyatt Russell – erstwhile Captain America, now U.S. Agent – in Thunderbolts, saying if those two got to reunite, he felt he should get another appearance with Evans.

Asked about the possible return of Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie said:

“I hope so. You know, Chris is my boy, we all love and enjoy Chris. I’m highly upset that they put Sebastian in a movie with Wyatt and left me out. There’s a whole lot going on! So I’m like, if Sebastian gets Wyatt, I should get Chris.”

Anthony Mackie’s next appearance as Captain America in New World Order will see him facing off against the Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, who is reprising the role for the first time since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

Anthony Mackie last appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Here is the synopsis:

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent. Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly also appear.
