Antonio Banderas would have gone up against the team in the original plan for The New Mutants sequel
While fans are just pleased that The New Mutants is finally heading to theaters, director Josh Boone confirmed that the Fox/Disney merger meant his planned sequels likely won’t happen. The director also revealed who would appear in the The New Mutants sequel, stating that Antonio Banderas would’ve been the villain of the film. Antonio Banderas would have played Emmanuel De Costa, Sunspot’s father.
In an interview with EW, Josh Boone discussed his plans for the sequel, explaining that the film would’ve seen the team travel to Brazil to try and find his father. Antonio Banderas was in talks for the role, and Boone would’ve included a post-credits scene with the character before his main appearance in the second film. The New Mutants sequel would’ve been based on the comic storyline where Sunspot’s father becomes embroiled with the Hellfire Club and tries to kill his wife. After confirming that the sequel would’ve introduced Warlock (a techno-organic alien) as well as Karma, a telepath who would’ve been the main villain of the film. Boone also mentioned that the team behind the film are just hoping it makes plenty of money so that they get the chance to do a sequel.
“In our heart of hearts, we hope [The New Mutants] makes a bunch of money so that we can go make the second one, we’re all just bummed at everything that happened. Just the merger and everything else. It had nothing to do with us personally and had an impact on every single movie at Fox at the time.”
