Aquaman 2 has been plagued with drama ever since it was announced. However, the film’s director James Wan says fans “don’t know the truth” when it comes to what was happening behind-the-scenes of the DC Studios production.
From Amber Heard’s controversial reputation to multiple regime changes at DC Studios, it seems as though Aquaman 2 just couldn’t catch a break. In fact, the only thing “breaking” seemed to be insiders and scoopers breaking stories about behind-the-scenes drama. However, if the film’s director James Wan is to be belived, the truth is much less interesting than reality:
“I’ve had to learn to be more Zen in dealing with all the noise around me, for sure,” James Wan told Empire. “I’m a pretty private person. I don’t get on social media and have fights, but it’s difficult because this narrative has emerged that is not the reality. The noise is fun to write about, and it gets clicks, but people don’t know the truth.”
For better or worse, drama is the name of the game on social media. So while it is fun to speculate about what’s happening behind-the-scenes at DC Studios, ultimately the only people who know the truth are James Wan and his cast and crew. Hopefully come December fans can submerge themselves in the reality the director cooked up for them in Aquaman 2.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
