‘Aquaman 2’ Director Reveals How He Deals With Hate For The DCU Sequel

Filter it out!

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom will go down as one of the DC Universe movies mired in the most controversy. In a recent interview, Aquaman director James Wan reveals how he’s handled all of the negativity surrounding the sequel.

It seems as though a perfect storm of bad luck has surrounded Aquaman 2. From the DCU getting a reboot to Amber Heard’s messy reputation, the sequel is almost doomed to fail. However, the film’s director James Wan seems to sing a different tune, revealing that he tries to ignore the negativity around the project, as the only thing people will remember in 20 years will be the film itself.

“I’ve been on this movie for four years now, and I’m so happy for it to come out,” Wan told Empire Magazine. “In many ways, I think it’s even more fun than the first one. But it’s been a long, exhausting process. It is definitely the noisiest movie I’ve ever worked on.”

“That’s the biggest thing I’ve learned from this experience. To filter out the negativity and focus on the film. Because that’s what will live on — in 20 years, no one will remember the noise. Only the movie.”

In an age where everyone feels the need to have a “take”, it’s refreshing to hear director James Wan is taking a step away from the noise. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom certainly still has a lot to prove in the eyes of fans, but it’s starting to seem the sequel may be the perfect capstone project prior to the DCU’s reboot.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
