It seems the DC Universe has some stormy waters. Following alleged disputes with Aquaman 2 star Jason Momoa and director James Wan, Elon Musk seemingly kept Amber Heard from being fired by Warner Bros. Pictures.
A new report by Variety has revealed more new allegations from Aquaman 2 star Amber Heard, this time about her treatment on set. Most notably, Heard alleges that the film’s star, Jason Momoa, would often show up drunk to shoot scenes. Heard claims he was dressed as her ex-husband Johnny Depp while pushing for her to get booted from the role. A DC Studios spokesperson has denied these claims, insisting Momoa was always professional on set.
Jason Momoa wasn’t the only member of the Aquaman 2 crew who allegedly had troubles with Amber Heard. Apparently, following the release of the first film, James Wan and DC Films (the former DC regime at WB) wanted to drop the actress due to a lack of chemistry with Momoa. This decision was reversed following a letter by Elon Musk, Heard’s ex-boyfriend, which threatened to “burn the house down” at Warner Bros. if Heard was fired from the film.
While representatives from Elon Musk’s and Jason Momoa’s teams have declined to comment, it seems as though Aquaman 2 faced trouble on set no matter who is to be believed. With DC Studios planning to take the DC Universe in a new direction, it’s unlikely Amber Heard will return for a third film. Given all of these controversies, that may ultimately be for the best.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
