‘Aquaman’ Star Jason Momoa On The Importance Of 2008’s ‘Iron Man’

Iron Man AquamanAquaman star Jason Momoa recently praised 2008’s Iron Man for its historical effect on the comic book movie genre.

Iron Man was the first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it undoubtedly had a profound effect on the industry. It opened one month prior to The Incredible Hulk and two months prior to The Dark Knight but Iron Man truly started a new trend in the movie industry. Not only did the film kick off the whole Cinematic Universe craze, but it also showed that a studio can take a superhero that is not well known amongst those outside of the comic book community and turn him into a global icon.

During an interview with Toronto Sun, Jason Momoa was promoting his latest DC film Aquaman and compared what the DC Extended Universe has done with heroes like Aquaman and Wonder Woman to what Marvel did with Iron Man a decade ago. This is what Momoa had to say about Iron Man after he was asked about why it took so long for Aquaman to get made.

“Gosh, I don’t know. The only thing about it now is, people want more. They’ve heard those other stories, and there’s plenty more to tell, but they want new ones. When Batman v Superman came out and it introduced Wonder Woman, she came in and blew it open. I feel like Marvel, in its own right, has been blowing the door open with other new characters as well. I mean look what Iron Man did. That was amazing.

Who knew what the hell Iron Man did? I definitely didn’t. I feel like I knew more about Aquaman, and I barely knew anything about Aquaman over Iron Man (laughs). Robert Downey just came in and destroyed it. So there are all these beautiful, modern mythologies that people get inspired by and it’s nice to see something different.”

During the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC was still in the midst of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. Before Man of Steel hit the big screen in 2013, the only other theatrical attempt DC made at deviating away from the Batman brand to broaden the cinematic DC landscape was 2011’s Green Lantern.
