‘Aquaman’ Star Jason Momoa Reveals Why He Lied About Getting The Role

Aquaman Jason MomoaWhen Jason Momoa won the role of Aquaman around five years ago, he made sure to stay tight-lipped about the casting.

When an actor is cast in something big like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, most of the time they can’t just go around telling people everything about the role and the film. Sometimes, actors slip up and reveal a bit too much during an interview but back in 2014, Jason Momoa wasn’t telling a soul that he had been cast as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, in the DC Extended Universe.

In a recent MTV News interview with Josh Horowitz, Momoa was reminded of something that happened back in 2014. Horowitz notoriously asked Momoa if he had been cast in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Aquaman but Momoa said that it was just a rumor and even told Horowitz that he could punch him in the face for lying. That punch never did happen, for obvious reasons, but Momoa did explain why he had to be so secretive about the issue during a recent interview with Horowitz. This is what Momoa had to say about the secrecy of his casting.

“I was sworn to secrecy by Zack, which I did not want to upset Zack. He said you are not allowed to tell anyone and let me tell you…I needed to put food on the table. When he released ‘Unite the Seven’ I was like ‘Gaaahhh’. Right before Christmas I was like ‘We’re gonna have food!'”

Momoa’s Aquaman appeared for only a brief moment in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as did the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). The underwater hero finally got his time to shine in 2017’s Justice League, though much of his arc was infamously edited out of the final cut of the film. Fans can see Momoa headline his first solo movie as Aquaman in less than a week, when it opens in U.S. theaters against Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns.
