‘Aquaman’ Star Jason Momoa Opens Up About His Batman Audition

Batman Aquaman Superman

Before he was cast as Aquaman, Jason Momoa auditioned to play the role of Batman in the DC Extended Universe.

The list of actors who have auditioned to play any various versions of Batman is endless. Ever since 1989’s Batman became a box office phenomenon, the Caped Crusader has been a coveted role by many actors in Hollywood. Ben Affleck had wanted to play the role for years and finally got his chance to when he starred in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film almost featured a very different actor in the role though.

It’s no secret that Jason Momoa previously auditioned for the role of Batman. It seems like he wasn’t in consideration for the role, and he knew that, but director Zack Snyder was convinced by his audition that he’d be great as Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman. During a recent interview with Jake Hamilton, Momoa provided some more details on his Batman audition.

“Yeah I kind of visualized, because it was a generic kind of just general scene from the Christian Bale movie The Dark Knight and I just, it was a big casting call so I knew a lot of people were going to be doing it and I just felt like it was a booby trap and I just didn’t want to do it.”

After being convinced by his agent, Momoa reluctantly took the audition. During the interview, Momoa detailed the thought process behind his portrayal of Batman/Bruce Wayne.

“So, we did it and I just pretended like Batman got killed in an alleyway and I picked it up and tried to play him like I was just down and out, poor, over it, just done wrong and he wasn’t afraid to punch even good people in the face.”

Momoa then further detailed the mind of the specific Caped Crusader that he was going for.

“And just go like unforgivable about certain things but also like flawed, like the kind of person who would jump off a cliff and figure out on the way down what we’re going to do.”

Finally, the Aquaman star revealed how Zack Snyder recruited him to play the underwater hero.

“So, they liked that and then I got called in about probably two to three weeks later and that’s when Zack laid it down and said ‘I want you to play Aquaman’, which was completely like ‘Excuse me?'”
