Could Diggle have been the perfect Green Lantern? New concept art shows off the character as the Arrowverse’s Emerald Knight.
One of the most frustrating stories in the final seasons of the Arrowverse’s lifespan was John Diggle’s struggles with becoming a Green Lantern. After years of speculation from fans and hints from showrunners, the iconic character finally received a Green Lantern ring in the final episode of Arrow, though ultimately didn’t put it on.
Following the finale, John Diggle would pop back up throughout the Arrowverse with the box containing the Green Lantern ring. While he would be tempted by its call, he would never actually put on DC’s most iconic piece of jewelry, ultimately throwing it away during one of his last appearances. This means that after nearly a decade of waiting, fans never got to see Diggle don the iconic Corps colors.
John Diggle’s Scrapped Green Lantern Suit
However, it seems John Diggle’s rejection of the Green Lantern ring wasn’t for lack of trying. According to Arrowverse architect Marc Guggenheim, the plan was always for Diggle to become the Emerald Knight at the end of Arrow, but they couldn’t get approval from higher-ups. While the idea never came to pass, he did share some concept art of what his suit might have looked like.
The internet has, of course, clowned this suit for looking cheap. However, the concept art does stay true to the design principles of the Arrowverse. While nothing special, longtime fans would’ve certainly had a giant smile on their face to see John Diggle finally take up the mantle as the Green Lantern. Sadly, it seems this may be the closest that dream comes to being a reality for a long time to come.
