It seems Brandon Routh may not be done playing Superman yet! Arrowverse creator Marc Guggenheim teased talks about a potential return for the actor in a new sequel series.

Brandon Routh got a raw deal as Superman. While his debut film Superman Returns did fine with audiences and at the box office, studio politics led to a sequel being abandoned and the role being recast for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Routh would eventually make his return in the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths to universal praise. However, it seems Marc Guggenheim had more plans for him in the Arrowverse, revealing he and Routh have discussed “exciting” ideas for a Superman Returns sequel series.

Sadly, it’s not likely Brandon Routh will return to play Superman in a series anytime soon, as Warner Bros. is currently focusing on James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. While a potential return may have been possible at the height of the Arrowverse’s popularity, it’s likely Routh will only play Superman in cameos and smaller supporting roles. Given how amazing he is in the role, that’ll likely be more than enough for fans!

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
