Steve Asbell, president of the Disney-owned 20th Century Studio assures that James Cameron’s Avatar 2 will be released in 2022.
When the first Avatar film was released back in 2009, it blew audiences away with its dazzling visual effects. The film went on to win three Academy Awards and became the highest-grossing film of all time. Since then, it was briefly dethroned by Avengers: Endgame, before it reclaimed the crown after a rerelease.
Since the release of the first Avatar film, James Cameron has been working on a sequel in some way, shape, or form. The director has written and rewritten the script for the film numerous times with production finally starting way back in 2017 and only concluding in 2020. Extensive CGI work and editing began, but, like many films, was delayed amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then we’ve only gotten a few images from the upcoming film but is still set to be released in 2022.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell assured that the film would be released later this year and that there are no plans for any further delays:
“Yes. It will. For real. It’s going to blow people away. You’re not ready for what Jim is doing.”
Here is the official synopsis for the first Avatar film:
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of Titanic, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
Avatar 2 is currently set to be released on December 16th of 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
