In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, who play Black Widow and Captain America respectively, said that a romance between their characters isn’t in the cards for Marvel‘s Avengers: Infinity War.
In anticipation of the next installment of the Avengers franchise, many fans have been wondering if Black Widow and Bruce Banner’s (Mark Ruffalo) romance will continue from Avengers: Age of Ultron. One of these reasons is that many fans believe that, due to the three years they spent together after Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers would be a better match for Natasha than Bruce. This question was addressed in a recent interview by Entertainment Tonight where Johansson explained in no uncertain terms that it wasn’t likely.
“It’s hard to say. I don’t think that romance has ever really been in the air for these two, it just doesn’t seem….sorry to disappoint,”
This sentiment was echoed by Evans when asked the same thing. While he was disappointed with the idea at first, Evans goes on to admit that it’s the reality of their characters:
“No I agree though, I think there’s a functionality there, there’s a void that they each fill for each other, and I think they’ve each kind of each had to face a little bit of a kind of destruction of a belief system along the way and I think they’ve each leaned on one another for different reasons. I think in a lot of ways Cap certainly looks up to Black Widow. I think she’s always been a little wiser, a little more experienced, a little more callous in the way the world really is, and I think in Civil War Steve Rogers had to learn the hard way that things that you’re banking on don’t always…sometimes let you down, and I think in the last couple of years before we pick up in this film they’ve really kind of become this rock for one another, but I don’t know if it ever bleeds into a romance.”
While it may be sad for some fans that a romance between the two isn’t possible, they can rest assured that the two will still remain friends and be as close as ever in the upcoming movie.
