In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Avengers: Endgame star Don Cheadle talked about scrapped plans for a War Machine solo film.
In 2008, the first Iron Man kickstarted a multi-film franchise that has spanned years. In Iron Man, we are hinted at a future where Tony Stark’s best pal Lt. Col James “Rhodey” Rhodes would become his own superhero, War Machine. And while we did see Rhody suit up in Iron Man 2, he has been subjugated to primarily a supporting role. While the films have focused on various Marvel characters throughout the years, characters like War Machine have never had their own solo film. Well, as revealed in a new interview, War Machine actor Don Cheadle had plans with Marvel for his own solo film but they were eventually scrapped.
With a script written by Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole, the film was to be a sort of a rogue agent type of story in which War Machine would struggle balancing his military career and being a superhero. Don Cheadle said the following about the project:
“We kicked it around a bit. There was definitely going to be a lot of tension between his job as a military man and his allegiances to the code that he swore an oath to uphold, versus the changing world.”
Cheadle elaborated and further explained the plot of the film, saying:
“I think they probably would have run afoul of each other a little bit, but I don’t know if he would have been a straight fugitive, or if he would have become decommissioned. But there was definitely going to be some tension between those two worlds.”
Despite the War Machcine project being canned, it seems that the film’s themes of duty and responsibility were fleshed out in other films like Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Winter Soldier. While Marvel does still seem interested in making solo films for previously introduced characters like Black Widow, it seems that this specific War Machine film won’t see the light of day. However, despite this news, it seems Don Cheadle will play a significant role in Avengers: Endgame.
