Don’t believe every theory you read on the internet! An event to help promote Avengers: Doomsday has seemingly debunked one viral idea about Doctor Doom.
There are a lot of questions about Doctor Doom heading into Avengers: Doomsday– something inevitable when the leading villain of the film has never been in a project before. Or…has he? With Robert Downey Jr. playing the film’s titular antagonist, a theory has cropped up that Doctor Doom ISN’T Victor Von Doom, but rather a Tony Stark variant turned evil.
It’s important to note what this theory is saying. Or rather, what it isn’t. It’s inevitable that the fact Doctor Doom shares a face with Iron Man will play a role in the story of Avengers: Doomsday. However, the connotations and specifics of that fact become wildly different depending on if the villain’s history is that of Tony Stark or Victor Von Doom.
Who Is Doctor Doom?
Yet the answer to this theory may have been revealed before the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is even out. Disney recently held a promotional event in Italy that revealed some key details about who will interact with who in the upcoming film. This included the names of the characters, which confirms once and for all that the version of Doctor Doom played by Robert Downey Jr. is Victor Von Doom and NOT a Tony Stark variant.

This information actually lines up with quite a few reports out of the rumor mill about the story of Avengers: Doomsday. While it’s sad to see such a popular theory be shot down before it even had a chance to fly, knowing that Doctor Doom isn’t a Tony Stark variant will help shape expectations for the trailer so fan’s aren’t disappointed with some of the major reveals held inside.
