Is Avengers: Doomsday going to waste Robert Downey Jr.? A rumor reveals that the actor may turn out to be unrecognizable when he takes on the role of Doctor Doom.
When Avengers: Doomsday was first announced, there was a subsection of fans that immediately became cynical about the prospect of Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom. Most saw it as a shameless cash grab to try to pander to nostalgia when the Multiverse angle had begun to falter in the public eye.
However, it seems as though Marvel may not even be using the face of Robert Downey Jr. to market Avengers: Doomsday. At least, not initially. A rumor from MyTimeToShineHello reveals that Doctor Doom WILL have a scarred face in the film like in the comics, suggesting that the character may end up looking a lot different than fans expect.
“Doctor Doom WILL have a scared face in Doomsday, at least at the start of it.”
Doctor Doom’s Face In Avengers: Doomsday
There’s two ways to take this rumor: one hopeful, one less so. The more cynical of the two ideas is that Doctor Doom will have relatively minor scars across his face in Avengers: Doomsday. This would allow for Robert Downey Jr. to still be recognizable while still maintaining what many see as a core aspect from the character in the comics.
The hopeful idea is that Doctor Doom DOES have a horrifically scarred face at the start of Avengers: Doomsday. However, in order to enact his plan, he uses magic or technology to make himself look like one of the world’s greatest heroes: Tony Stark. This would let Marvel have their cake and eat it too, by using Robert Downey Jr. as this version of Doctor Doom but saving the “true” face of Doom for a new actor.
