The true origin of Gambit has been revealed! The latest rumor for Avengers: Doomsday reveals the original universe of Channing Tatum’s ragin’ Cajun!
While the cast of Avengers: Doomsday was full of surprises, perhaps no surprise was bigger than the reveal that Channing Tatum would return to play Gambit. On one hand, it’s shocking that a film which focuses so heavily on the early days of Fox’s X-Men would add a new face to the legacy cast. On the other hand, the character was so popular online that it would be insane NOT to include him.
Yet one glaring question stands out in the lead up to the film: Where does Gambit come from? A big joke in Deadpool and Wolverine is that Channing Tatum’s character never really knew his home universe, which was a jab at his film being cancelled before production. If he’s going to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, his origin would likely have to be covered in some way.
What Universe Is Channing Tatum’s Gambit From?
The answer to his mysterious origin seems to have been revealed in the latest rumor. According to the site QuidVacuo, Avengers: Doomsday will reveal that Channing Tatum’s version of Gambit will be from the universe seen in the post-credits scene of The Marvels. For those who didn’t see the film, the universe was seemingly home to a team of X-Men which included Kelsey Grammer’s Beast and Lashana Lynch as Binary.
At this time, fans don’t exactly know how that universe fits into Avengers: Doomsday. The presence of Kelsey Grammer as Beast means it could be the original Fox timeline. However, Channing Tatum being Gambit would be a retcon, as the character was originally portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Though given how wonky Fox’s canon has always been, making the original timeline the origin of Tatum’s Gambit might just be simpler.
