One of the oddest reveals to ever come out of the MCU was the fact that Robert Downey Jr. would be taking on the role of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. While Iron Man and Doctor Doom have occasionally been tied in the comics, they’ve never been “Same Face” level close. And despite how prominent the rumor mill has gotten this past year, there’s been little relief found in reports from leakers and scoopers.
However, it seems as though Avengers: Doomsday may not answer that burning question either. A rumor from John Campea on The Hot Mic suggests that fans may have to wait until the end of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga with Secret Wars to figure out why Robert Downey Jr. was brought back to play the villainous Doctor Doom.
Why Is Robert Downey Jr. Playing Doctor Doom?
Even though this rumor suggests that fans won’t get an answer in Avengers: Doomsday, that doesn’t mean speculation is moot. There’s been a lot of amazing theories as to why Robert Downey Jr. was brought back to play Doctor Doom in the MCU. Perhaps the most popular being that Marvel has no reason besides nostalgia bait.
However, given the rumor mill suggests that Doctor Doom will suffer a major loss in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s possible that he was given the face of Tony Stark to parallel his story in the MCU. It’s also possible that, just as Robert Downey Jr. is being used to draw fans to Avengers: Doomsday, Doctor Doom is using a familiar face to try to get the Avengers to side with him during the film.
