Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo explained why the filmmaker decided to give Iron Man a funeral over Black Widow.
The unexpected decision to kill off Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame prompted some negative reactions from fans, with one of the criticisms focused on the decision to give Tony Stark a funeral but not Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Joe Russo explained that the decision to give Iron Man a sendoff was made partly because Scarlett Johansson is still set to return in Marvel Studios’ Black Widow next year.
Joe Russo explained that with only so much time to work with, it made sense to complete Iron Man’s story in his final film when Natasha Romanoff still had the opportunity for closure in Black Widow:
“When you’re dealing with storytelling real estate in a three-hour movie, there’s only so much of it, and someone else has another film coming, there’s always the opportunity to bring closure in that other movie. In this movie, we had to bring closure to Tony Stark.”
