Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained why they felt Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow had to sacrifice herself in Avengers: Endgame.
With Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame being touted as the conclusion to the first decade of MCU stories ahead of its release, fans spent months speculating on which of the long-time heroes could meet their demise. While Iron Man and Captain America were considered the most likely candidates to perish in Avengers: Endgame, most fans were stunned when Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow turned out to be one of the casualties, having sacrificed her life in exchange for the Soul Stone.
However, some fans were not pleased with the decision to kill Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow instead of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and many questioned why the former had to be the one to give up her life. Though the decision came as a surprise to most, Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed had the fate of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in mind for a while:
“Obviously, she as a character has a bit more — she hasn’t had a solo movie, there’s stories to be told there — but on her Avengers arc, that moment, we’d set up the math in the first movie. Somebody has to die to get the Soul Stone. It’s the only way you get it. You need two people who love each other to make the equation work. When we figured out where that five year gap had left all the people, it really had left her at this spot where all she was working for was holding the line, staying on the wall, holding the world together and this was what she would do. There was no question about it. I don’t know who told Scarlett [Johansson], it wasn’t me.”
