According to Avengers: Endgame‘s directors Chris Evans’ Captain America was always worth of Thor’s hammer!

In one of Avengers: Endgame’s best moment, Captain America is able to wield Thor’s hammer and fight off Thanos who had the God of Thunder pinned down. Thor responds to this twist by saying “I knew it!” before the battle against the Mad Titan resumes. And, according to the film’s directors, Captain America had always been worthy.

During a recent interview with Stitcher, the directors talked about this twist and how the set up for it was established in Avengers: Age of Ultron and how it ultimately paid off in Endgame:

I think it goes all the way back to Ultron. You know it was something that uh.. I think that every one that is a Marvel fan in that moment where Cap tested the hammer felt deep down in the heart that he was worthy and he could potentially lift that. Boy wouldn’t it be special one day if he did. And you know obviously if you create drama around the circumstances of him wielding the hammer and then kicking Thanos’ ass for thirty seconds after that we could..we felt like we could create a raisable moment for the audience.

When asked about why Chris Evans’ Captain America was not able to wield Thor’s hammer up until this moment the Avengers: Endgame directors stated that he was always worthy and had known it since Age of Ultron. He just didn’t let anyone know so not to humiliate Thor:

Well in our heads he was able to wield it. And he didn’t know that until that moment in Ultron when he tried to pick it up but Cap’s sense of character and his sort of humility and his..sort of like out of deference to Thor’s ego..you know…Cap in that moment realizing that he can move the hammer decides not to.

From the sound of things, the directors really wanted Chris Evans’ Captain America to wield Thor’s hammer!
