‘Avengers: Endgame’ Writers Explain How Two Captain Americas Exist In The Timeline

Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained how two versions of Captain America could exist in the Marvel Cinemaic Universe timeline.

Avengers: Endgame established time travel rules in which altering the past creates a branched a timeline instead of changing the present or future, as is the case in most science-fiction stories. However, Captain America’s decision to reunite with Peggy Carter in the past after returning the Infinity Stones raised questions about whether the first Avenger lived out his life in a branched timeline or if two versions of him existed in the main MCU timeline the whole time.

In an interview with Backstory Magazine, Avengers: Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely outline how two versions of Captain America could have existed in the main MCU timeline without disrupting how history unfolded:

“Here’s how we reconcile it. We think there have always been two Caps from 1945 to, say, now, and we just didn’t know that. That’s the loop, right? It’s not Back to the Future rules, it’s branch reality rules. This is not stepping on a butterfly that turns the world into Biff’s casino. You can’t alter your future by going back to the past.”

After reiterating the rules of time travel as explained by the Ancient One, McFeely confirmed that old Steve Rogers would have attended the funeral of Peggy Carter in Captain America: Civil War:

“[He] jumped to 1948 and decided to stay. So, his younger self is on ice somewhere and it’s only in 2011 that there are technically two Steves running around — to the point where if you were to look closely at Peggy’s funeral, there’d be an old man in the back named Roger Stevens.”

Stephen McFeely then added that audiences could not actually spot an old Steve Rogers if they revisited Captain America: Civil War and that the closing scene of Avengers: Endgame, where Steve and Peggy finally get to dance with each other, would have taken place “sometime after the second season of Agent Carter.”

Marvel fans have been clamoring to see Mysterio in a live-action film ever since the release of Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie. While the writers incorporated elements of previous Marvel Studios films for the origin of Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio, this take on the character was largely faithful to the source material, especially in terms of the villain's costume design. However, new concept illustrations reveal alternate designs for Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio suit were considered, some of which are notably different from the comic book outfit with entirely different color schemes.
