‘Avengers: Endgame’ Directors Defend New Look For Chris Hemsworth’s Thor

Warning: The following posts contains Avengers: Endgame spoilers about Chris Hemsworth’s Thor!

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, directors Anthony and Joe Russo explained the reasoning behind the new look for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame jumped ahead five years into the future after our heroes learned Thanos destroyed the Infinity Stones (preventing them from reversing his decimation) and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor murdered the Mad Titan in retaliation. When audiences reunite with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the God of Thunder has gained weight and let his hair grow out after years of isolation and drinking, resulting in a new look that Tony Stark compares to “The Dude” from The Big LebowskiAvengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo explained the new look was meant to convey how much Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has fallen apart because he blames himself for Thanos’ victory:

“How is everyone processing their grief? We wanted them all to process it in very different ways. And Thor is an exceedingly tragic character who was built from the time he was a boy to be a king, What is the distance that a character like that can travel, a god? Somebody, especially, who looks like Chris Hemsworth?”

Though Chris Hemsworth’s Thor offered some of the more comedic moments in the film, Anthony Russo noted his new look was not entirely intended to be a gag:

“Even though there’s a lot of fun to be had in the movie with his physical condition, it’s not a gag. It’s a manifestation of where he is on a character level, and we think it’s one of the most relatable aspects of him. I mean, it’s a very common sort of response to depression and pain.”

While most of the characters who perished in Infinity War return after our heroes retrieve the Infinity Stones from the past, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor retains his new look and Anthony Russo explained that this is because there’s still a long road before he recovers:

“He may have made some repair in this movie and made progress, but that experience that brought him to that physical condition is still with him, and it’s a longer road beyond that. We don’t know what that road beyond that is for him.”

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
