Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, have revealed the comic book storyline they would consider turning into an even bigger fifth Avengers movie.

The Russo brothers first worked with Marvel Studios on the Captain America series, directing The Winter Soldier and its sequel, Civil War. They would then go on to replace Joss Whedon as directors of the Avengers movies, helming the epic two-part conclusion to the MCU’s Infinity Saga.

Recalling the Marvel comics they most enjoyed in their youth, the directing duo have revealed the storyline they think would exceed Avengers: Endgame in its scale and ambition.

From ‘Infinity War’ To ‘Secret Wars’

The Russos named Marvel’s original Secret Wars crossover event as one of their favorite comic storylines and cited the ambition of the story as an indicator that it would dwarf even the previous two epic Avengers movies were it to be adapted for the big screen.

While speaking to Deadline at the premiere of their latest film, The Gray Man, the Russo brothers were asked about whether they might be interested in returning to Marvel Studios for Avengers 5. Joe Russo then brought up Secret Wars, though noted that the scale of such an undertaking means they would “have to sleep on it.”

The Avengers: Endgame co-director said:

“Our love for Marvel is based on the books that we read as kids and the books that we fell in love with. The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars. It’s incredibly ambitious, it would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame, but it’s a massive undertaking. And, you know, those two movies were very hard to make. So, trying to imagine making another two movies even bigger than those two—we’re going to have to sleep on it.”

Secret Wars has been brought up before, both by the Russo brothers and by Marvel fans, as a potential basis for the next Avengers movie.

The comic storyline saw a cosmic entity known as the Beyonder transporting the superheroes and supervillains of Earth to a planet called Battleworld, pitting them against each other in a war of good and evil. It is generally considered the first ever major crossover event in comics history.

Here is the synopsis for Avengers: Endgame:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Avengers: Endgame is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming on Disney Plus through IMAX Enhanced presentation.
