Rhett Reese, a writer working on Deadpool 3, has revealed that Marvel Studios has taken a “hands-off” approach to the Ryan Reynolds sequel that will bring Wade Wilson into the MCU.
The first two Deadpool films were made by 20th Century Fox, when the film rights to Marvel’s X-Men characters were still held by Fox. Following Disney’s acquisition of the studio, however, Deadpool is now in the hands of Marvel Studios and will be brought into the MCU in Deadpool 3.
Questions are swirling around how Marvel will explain Deadpool’s jump across realities and how the notoriously R-rated Merc with a Mouth will fit into Marvel’s traditionally more family-friendly universe.
Marvel’s Not Messing With Deadpool’s Formula
Rhett Reese, who is co-writing Deadpool 3 alongside Paul Wernick, recently spoke to Discussing Film about the project and Marvel’s approach to the former Fox property.
Reese revealed that Marvel Studios has given the writers a lot of free rein on Deadpool 3, apparently not wanting to hamper their vision. The first two Deadpool films proved incredibly popular with fans and it sounds like fears Marvel would want to tone down the franchise were entirely unfounded.
The issue of incorporating Deadpool into the MCU has likely thrown up as many questions for Marvel as it has for fans. However, it sounds like the studio understands how beloved the character is and doesn’t want to jeopardize that.
Talking about the support and leeway he and Paul Wernick have received from Marvel, Rhett Reese said:
“It’s almost like putting on a comfy old sweater. Marvel’s really given us the support to maintain the tone and the vision that we have for it. They’ve been very hands-off and supportive, but they’ve also let us do what we do. So really, it’s just been fun. We’re mad scientists back in the laboratory again. Deadpool is our favorite who will always be the character I think we’re most associated with, and we’re very grateful for being allowed to write him again. So it’s a blast. It’s like going back to school again after having summer off. It’s pretty fun.”
Deadpool 3 seems to be set to continue in the irreverent style established by the first two movies. Notably, Deadpool is expected to be the only Fox character being carried over into the MCU permanently. A Fantastic Four reboot is currently in the works at Marvel Studios and the Ms. Marvel finale seemed to imply Marvel’s getting ready to reimagine the X-Men as well.
Deadpool 3 is yet to get an official release date. Here is the synopsis for the previous film, Deadpool 2:
After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.
Directed by David Leitch from a script written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.
Deadpool 2 is available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the upcoming sequel, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content.
