The first set photos to surface online confirm filming is now underway on the latest Marvel project in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe: Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web.

Madame Web is set to introduce Dakota Johnson as Marvel’s blind mystic, who has often acted as a mysterious mentor figure to Spider-Man. The film will join titles such as Tom Hardy’s Venom, Jared Leto’s Morbius and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Kraven the Hunter in Sony’s universe of Spider-Man spinoffs.

After months of casting announcements for the film, Madame Web has finally entered production with new set photos confirming it will at least partially take place in the early 2000s.

‘Madame Web’ Lands In NYC 20 Years Ago

The first set photos from Madame Web filming to surface online reveal areas of Boston being decorated with advertising for Palm Pilots boasting “3G speed” and a billboard for Beyoncé’s album “Dangerously In Love,” placing the film in 2003.

Whether all of Madame Web will take place around 20 years ago or whether the scenes currently being shot form part of a flashback sequence is not yet clear. Details of the Marvel film have been kept tightly under wraps, though it is believed to be an origin story for its title character.

Check out the new set photos, revealing the film’s early 2000s setting, in the tweet below:

Previous reports have referred to Madame Web as Sony’s answer to Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange. Given that Dakota Johnson is much younger than Madame Web appears in the comics, it is not yet clear how close the film will stay to its source material.

Here is the synopsis for the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Morbius:

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.

Directed Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the film stars Jared Leto as the lead anti-hero, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project with Lucas Foster, while Palak Patel will oversee for Sony.

Morbius is now available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Madame Web, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
