Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained why Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was absent from the final battle of Avengers: Endgame.
After successfully retrieving the Infinity Stones from the past and using them to bring back everyone erased by Thanos decimation, nearly every hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe assembled for an epic battle against the Mad Titan and his forces. However, despite being the one who initially united Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was not present for the spectacular showdown and only made a brief cameo during Tony Stark’s funeral.
Avengers: Endgame Christopher Markus explained that Samuel L. Jackson was never considered for the final battle due to the character’s limited capabilities:
“I don’t think we ever put him in. It was [because] we have such a traffic jam of heroes and so much power, that to have a guy who, in combat, would just be firing a gun… it doesn’t come off well for Nick Fury, frankly.”
