Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained why they believe Captain America proves an optimistic Superman film can work today.
While Henry Cavill’s version of Superman has earned a legion of fans, others strongly believe the DC Extended Universe’s dark and morose take on the traditionally bright and hopeful hero has been a step back for the character. While some argue the “Big Blue Boy Scout” qualities of Superman wouldn’t work in a modern era, Avengers: Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely told Screen Rant they believe Chris Evans’ Captain America proves otherwise:
“I certainly think Captain America shows that are certainly ways to do a really good Superman movie in this day. You don’t have to dirty him up, you don’t have to get rid of his earnestness. The Christopher Reeve Superman is one of my favorite movies and so, that’s one we certainly borrow from all the time.”
When asked if they would be up for penning the script for a new Superman film, Christopher Markus would only note that there is a lot to do in such a short life:
“You know, it’s a short life and there’s a lot of work to be done within it.”

Avengers: Endgame will be available on Digital HD starting July 30 followed by a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 13.
