At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed a discarded idea where Thanos would have killed a past version of Chris Evans’ Captain America.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame featured unique rules of time travel that allowed multiple versions of our heroes to exist in the past without disrupting the well-established Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. As a result, the writers of Avengers: Endgame toyed with the idea of killing a past version of our heroes that would have led to a gruesome confrontation between Thanos and Chris Evans’ Captain America.
As the Avengers: Endgame writers explained, after learning of our heroes’ plans to collect the stones and reverse his decimation, 2014 Thanos would have traveled to Earth and murdered Earth’s Mightiest heroes before venturing to the main MCU timeline in 2023. However, Thanos would have brought the decapitated head of Chris Evans’ 2014 Captain America with him and use it to taunt the Steve Rogers we know during the battle at Avengers headquarters at the end of Endgame.
