At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Avengers: Endgame co-writer Christopher Markus debunked a popular theory regarding how Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man survived Thanos’ decimation.
Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp concluded with Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang being trapped inside of the Quantum Realm after Hope van Dyne, Hank Pym, and Janet were erased by Thanos’ decimation. With no one left to free him, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man remained in the Quantum Realm until a rat inadvertently freed him from the alternate dimension five years later.
Some fans theorized that Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man was able to survive the decimation because those inside of the Quantum Realm were immune to the effects of the Infinity Stones. However, Avengers: Endgame co-writer Christopher Markus confirmed that theory is incorrect and that Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man was simply among the 50% who were spared by chance:
“I think he was coin-flip lucky, because the Infinity Stones do not differentiate between realms.”
