War Machine almost entered the fight sooner in Infinity War!

Newly revealed concept art from Avengers: Infinity War has revealed a cut scene involving Don Cheadle’s War Machine from early on in the film.

Infinity War kicked off a hugely ambitious two-part crossover event for the MCU, which would conclude in Avengers: Endgame, calling every major MCU character into the battle against Thanos. The latest piece of concept art to emerge from Infinity War reveals War Machine almost took part in one of the film’s earliest battles.

Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Rhodey was left unable to walk without the assistance of a specially designed harness from Tony Stark, but he wasn’t going to let that keep him out of the fight. This concept art shows he almost utilized another piece of Stark tech to assist his fellow Avengers.

War Machine Joins The Avengers In Edinburgh (Sort Of)

The concept art, shared by artist Phil Saunders on Instagram, shows Don Cheadle’s Rhodey in a “holographic control system,” piloting the War Machine armor remotely to assist in the battle of Edinburgh in the opening scenes of Avengers: Infinity War.

In the film, this fight pitted Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight against Wanda Maximoff, the Vision, Captain America, Black Widow and the Falcon. The heroes, who have been on the run since the conclusion to Civil War, then reunite with Rhodey after the battle. Originally, however, it looks like the plan was for Rhodey to be more involved.

The post also reveals that Bruce Banner would have been piloting the Hulkbuster armor in this early version of the Edinburgh-based fight scene. Sadly, the scene didn’t make it past the concept art stage, but the artwork offers a look at the War Machine sequence we could have seen.
